The loftiest words can do no justice to the stunning beauty of the offered 1963 Topps #200 Mickey Mantle card, nor can the softest words soothe the seeming injustice of its recently opined PSA 8 NM-MT grade. A truly fantastic card with Mint to Gem Mint features throughout. Undeniably Mint to Gem Mint corners join equally impressive Mint to Gem Mint edges around a perfectly centered and completely print-free image of The Mick embarking on his 1963 campaign. A microscopic examination of every square millimeter of the card cannot turn up anything remotely indicative of a NM-MT 8 grade. The card is truly as close to perfect as they come. To be totally transparent, we submitted it back to PSA for review at the $200 service level on our consignor's behalf, and after receiving the review results with no change, we were so frustrated that we requested an explanation, something that PSA rarely if ever provides. The answer we received is that the card's mildly off-white borders are too off-white to be considered for a higher grade; that is to say that the borders should be pure snow-white in hue, not cream colored. Were it graded ten or twenty years ago, this card would have been a shoe-in for the Mint 9 grade, but as most collectors know, grading has only gotten more precise and conservative with each passing year, and so we reluctantly offer this card to our bidders in the grade of NM-MT 8 but with the unequivocal, undeniable, and self-evident reality that is is extremely, extraordinarily high-end.
