Graded PSA 10 Gem Mint Pop 1. As even most novice modern card collectors know, if you are looking for a player's key first-year card, then Bowman Chrome is the go-to source. Although Mariners outfielder Ichiro Suzuki did not have an autographed rookie in the product, he did have a trio of scarce and desirable chromium cards to chase in the brand's groundbreaking 2001 release: Refractor, Xfractor, and Gold Refractor. To top it off, each of these three prismatic Bowman Chrome cards were available in English and Japanese variations, with the Japanese versions naturally taking on special significance to rookie card collectors due to the featured player's eternal samurai spirit.

In fact, the 2001 Bowman Chrome Gold Refractor ranks among the top three or four Ichiro rookie cards in the hobby for three specific reasons: its low print run—only 99 serial-numbered copies were printed in each language—its aforementioned Bowman Chrome pedigree, and its shear beauty. Indeed, one certainly doesn't have to look twice to see that it is a very special card. In addition to its magnificent visual appeal, however, it is also extremely condition sensitive. When uncovered, examples are frequently badly off-centered, bear small surface scratches, or exhibit chipping on the black-bordered back edges and corners. As such, only seven of the English Gold Refractor version have ever attained PSA's top Gem Mint 10 designation, the most recent sale of which fetched a handsome $7,200 in PWCC's recent April 2019 auction. If that's not impressive enough, then consider the last PSA 10 Xfractor to sell, a Pop 3 at the time of its October 2018 eBay auction, when it commanded a princely $15,989.

The preeminent copy showcased here, however, is unlike any of the cards in those previous auctions. Imprinted on the reverse with serial number 52/99, the offered Japanese language 2001 Bowman Chrome Gold Refractor Ichiro is the only example to ever grade PSA 10 Gem Mint. It is a singular achievement in the high-stakes world of ultra high-end modern card collecting. Its scarcity is matched only by its undeniable beauty, as its golden metallic surface refracts the light into a dazzling panoply of rainbow color on front, and its Japanese characters on back lend a delightfully unfamiliar far eastern allure to its otherwise familiar design. When accounting for his massive American and Asian fan bases, Ichiro is arguably the world's most popular baseball player—some would even argue the most beloved player in baseball history—and the offered card is arguably his single best in existence, worthy of joining the very best collections on the planet.
