It is arguably the most iconic baseball card ever produced, the 1989 Upper Deck #1 Ken Griffey, Jr. Star rookie card, offered here in pristine PSA 10 Gem Mint condition. In 1989, Upper Deck changed the baseball card industry forever with the introduction of its super premium inaugural issue. The groundbreaking set featured a noticeably higher quality card stock than Topps and other competitors as well as a catalog of ultra high quality photographic images, all of which were certified with actual holograms embedded on card backs. It was the hobby's first-ever super premium issue.

Most memorable of all was the set's #1 card, which featured the game's most exciting prospect in generations. Sparked by a rabid demand for Ken Griffey, Jr.'s most coveted rookie card, consumers could not get enough, and prices for The Kid's #1 card quickly soared to over four figures. Although prices would mellow throughout the middle 90s, demand returned in the later 90s, with price tags again soaring to $1,000 and even $2,000. Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, prices again mellowed, as online trading helped to reveal the large quantity of 1989 Upper Deck cards that were produced.

However, in recent months the card has caught fire once again, with BGS 10 Pristine examples consistently fetching $3,000 to $4,000 and PSA 10 Gem Mint examples beginning to break the four-figure level as well. As of writing this description, the last PSA 10 auction on eBay fetched $1,085 on April 15th. In the car world, a Cadillac is a Cadillac and will always carry strong value. In the card world, regardless of how many millions were produced—think 1993 SP Foil Jeter or 2011 Topps Update Trout—the same can be said for Ken Griffey, Jr.'s 1989 Upper Deck rookie card, especially in perfect condition.
