Ken Griffey, Jr., AKA "The Kid," was the number one overall selection by the Seattle Mariners during the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft held on June 2, 1987. Just over a week later, Griffey joined the Bellingham Mariners of the Northwest League, a Class A Short Season minor league. He debuted on June 16, 1987, and during the 54-game season he hit .313, led the team with 14 home runs, 40 RBI, and 13 steals. Appropriately, Baseball America magazine named him the league's number one major league prospect.

Offered here is an investment lot of nine (9) copies of Junior's 1987 Bellingham Mariners Team issue, his very first baseball card, all graded PSA 9 Mint. For all the hype Griffey's Upper Deck and Fleer Glossy and Bowman and Topps Tiffany rookie cards receive, the 1987 Bellingham issue has flown so far under the radar that it's basically been buried underground! Compared to the millions of Upper Deck cards produced and the many thousands of Fleer Glossies and Topps Tiffanies, the 1987 Bellingham Mariners Team Issue is indeed a diamond resting in relative obscurity and waiting to be discovered by the masses. By the way, if the nine (9) Mint 9 copies offered in this lot don't satisfy your lust for buried treasure, please visit lot #161 in this auction for another lot of six (6) examples, all likewise graded PSA 9 Mint.
