A true borderline Gem, we've certainly seen more than a few "superior" BGS 9.5 Gem Mint and PSA 10 Gem Mint Michael Jordan rookie cards that don't measure up to the offered Mint 9 example, which was graded in November of 2007 with serial number 0005398189 and boasts subgrades of 9 / 9.5 / 9.5 / 9, just missing Gem Mint 9.5 overall by 0.5 points, and never reviewed. Sure to fetch a premium in its current grade, the question is, could it potentially "bump" to BGS 9.5 Gem Mint or possibly even to the more expensive PSA 10 Gem Mint? Instead of providing a definitive answer, which we are unable to do -- grading and reviewing already graded cards can be a terribly frustrating process -- we will simply present the evidence. First, it is important to note that the microscopic white dot in the blue area of the upper left border is not on the card itself; it is a dust particle trapped in the plastic grading case during the sealing process. There is a similar but smaller particle to the left of Jordan's torso that doesn't even show in our super-sized scan. The surface has been deemed Mint 9, rather, because of a hardly discernible white speck in the extreme lower left corner of the blue name plate on front. The back shows a small line in the lower left corner, but that, too, is a particle trapped in the sealing process, although there is a small trace trace of print in the top back border and in the stats area. For Gem Mint consideration, Beckett states that "A few extremely minor print spots, detectable only under intense scrutiny" are permitted. Are these minor enough? You decide. As for centering, Beckett allows 50/50 one way and 55/45 the other, but both left-to-right and top-to-bottom appear about 55/45 here. The grading standards for Gem Mint 10 at PSA, however, state that "the image must be centered on the card within a tolerance not to exceed approximately 55/45 to 60/40 percent on the front." So, again, you decide. Whether this card ever finds a new home in a Gem Mint holder from either BGS or PSA, however, the fact is that Michael Jordan rookie cards don't come very much better than this premium copy, which should naturally merit your premium consideration.
