Rookie card hysteria didn't begin in earnest until 1984 or 1985, when Yankees first baseman Don Mattingly made continual headlines with his league leading offensive production. In his second season of 1984, he paced the American League with 207 hits and a .343 average. In 1985, he led all of baseball with 145 RBI, 48 doubles, and 170 total bases, winning the AL MVP award for the Yankees for the first time since Thurman Munson in 1976. It was after that memorable season that Donnie Baseball's rookie cards set the hobby on fire. Offered in this lot is a clean and tightly sealed 1984 Topps baseball wax case with 20 untouched boxes that should yield somewhere between 15 and 25 potentially pristine copies of Mattingly's iconic Topps rookie card, which fetches $300 in PSA 10 condition and is considered a relatively easy card to grade. Other key cards from this classic Topps issue include the rookie card of Mattingly's crosstown rival Darryl Strawberry, plus highly collectible issues of Hall of Famers Nolan Ryan, Pete Rose, Rickey Henderson, George Brett, Tony Gwynn, Ryne Sandberg, and dozens more. VintageCardPrices.com lists the value of a completely PSA 10 graded set at $17,805.
