It's not very often you see a card graded by Beckett Vintage Grading (BVG) with a silver flip. Awarded only to pre-1980 cards earning NM-MT+ 8.5 or Mint 9 status, this particular silver BVG label is proudly printed with the description of the precious contents with which it is encased: a 1962 Topps #200 Mickey Mantle card. Graded BVG 8.5, this wood-grained beauty features a now-classic head shot of the Hall of Famer set in front of a blue sky backdrop. No frills here! In the 1962 season— just one year removed from the his captivating home run record chase in tandem with Yankees teammate Roger Maris— Mantle won his third and final MVP award, despite missing 39 games. He and his New York mates once again captured baseball's ultimate prize, defeating the San Francisco Giants for the title in a World Series Game 7 for the ages. Although the 1962 championship would be the seventh and final crown of Mick's storied career in the Bronx, his legacy in the game was secure. "The imprint of baseball greatness is upon Mickey Mantle just as surely as the portrait of Thomas Jefferson graces the current three-cent stamp, but it may still take a while before the American sporting public becomes aware of the magnitude of Mickey's talents," sportswriter Harold Rosenthal once exclaimed. Meanwhile, with its clean edges, sharp corners and accurate centering, do not underestimate the magnitude of this Mantle card; it is every bit a nice as those we've seen in PSA holders. An investment piece you can admire on your, um... Mantle, this card is one of the must-haves for collectors of vintage cardboard of the Commerce Comet.
