One of the nicer Mickey Mantle rookie cards you will find in lower to mid grades, the offered example is entirely free of creasing and features a noticeably bold image of "The Commerce Comet" accented by near pixel perfect registration, which refers to the alignment of the different color layers impressed upon the cardboard to produce the final image. Very often, when these different layers are even microscopically misaligned, the result is a blurred image with fuzzy outlines. However, as you can see from our super-sized scan -- click the image once to enlarge it and then click the white icon in the lower right corner to super-size it -- the registration here is almost perfect, with perhaps just a micro-touch of pink or red extending off the left side of the rookie's cap and elbow. The brilliant colors are as bold as can be, and the back is delightfully wax-free, while the corners and edges show VG-EX 4 grade-appropriate wear, and the surface displays some unobtrusive print and hardly perceptible abrasion. Whether you're collecting Mantle cards or Hall of Fame rookies or attempting to build a 1951 Bowman set, the offered Mickey Mantle rookie card is what hobbyists often refer to as a "collector's grade" specimen, or what we at Small Traditions (and also at The Upper Deck Company) like to call a "collector's choice." It is a lower grade example that won't cost tens of thousands of dollars, but it is crease-free and displays some higher end presentation factors that make it a keeper.
