Although pictured in the glory of their dynastic Philadelphia Athletics uniforms, the trio of future Hall of Famers featured on the offered 1936 National Chicle Fine Pens issue had long since departed Connie Mack's second dynasty squad of the late 1920s and early 1930s. After winning three pennants and two World Series championships from 1929 to 1931, Mack shipped Simmons to Chicago after the 1932 season and then Cochrane to Detroit and pitcher Lefty Grove to Boston after the 1933 season. With back-to-back-to-back AL MVP winners in Grove (1931) and first baseman Jimmie Foxx (1932 and 1933), Mack had hope to continue the A's winning ways, but mounting financial pressures from the Great Depression forced him to continue to downsize, eventually moving Foxx, also to Boston, after the 1935 season. The once dominant Athletics would never be the same, finishing under .500 for the first time in a decade in 1934, and then finishing under .400 in 10 of the 12 following seasons. Recently graded PSA 7.5 NM+, offered here is the hobby's single highest graded example of the nostalgic 1936 National Chicle Fine Pens issue that captures the three smiling teammates before the once-dominant A's precipitous fall to the bottom of the American League.
