Few cards from any sport produced in the 1990s can rival the appeal and value of Kobe Bryant's 1996-97 Topps Chrome Refractor rookie card, offered here in extremely high-end BGS 9.5 Gem Mint condition with three Pristine 10 subgrades. There's the infamous 1990 Topps Frank Thomas No-Name Error rookie card, and then there is the 1993 SP Foil Derek Jeter rookie card in PSA 10 Gem Mint condition, and that's about it. Recently sidelined again due to injury -- Kobe tore his Achilles tendon last season, recovered, and then broke a bone in his left knee on December 19th, which will require a six-week recovery -- the Laker star will need to modify his tenacious style of play if he intends to consummate his November 2013 two-year contract extension with LA, thereby making him the first player in the history of the NBA to play 20 seasons with the same franchise. As for his other numbers -- five championships, 15 All-Star appearances with five All-Star game MVP awards, 11 selections to the All NBA First Team and 9 selections to the NBA All Defensive First Team, and 31,700 points (fourth all-time) -- only Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain can really compare. Kobe needs about 600 more points to overtake Michael Jordan for third place on the NBA career scoring leaders list, and he has already challenged Wilt's 1962 record-setting 100-point game when he scored 81 against the Raptors in 2006, the second most in a single game next to Wilt's 100 and an unimaginable accomplishment in the modern era. As with baseball superstar Derek Jeter, challenged by injury and age in young man's game, Kobe has the opportunity to rewrite the record books with only a few more healthy seasons. It will require him to be what he already is -- one of the single greatest athletes in sporting history -- only with a little more grace and temperance, and won't it be nice to own this top copy of his best rookie card as the world waits and watches with baited breath.
