Spring 2017 Major League Baseball "Set Registry Masters" Premium Auction
The offered 1960 Mickey Mantle's Holiday Inn Diamond Matchbook is something of a marvel in the way of Mickey Mantle memorabilia. Its condition is so remarkably well-preserved that it appears as if it was never actually folded to include matches. Search the internet all you like for a comparable copy, but we promise you that no such thing exists. Every other copy shows at least some degree of paper or print loss at the top folds where the matchbook forms a spine around "JOPLIN, MISSOURI" and also at the bottom striker area where the cardboard folds again to hold the book of matches. I remember handling this piece before submitting it to PSA and thinking how unusually solid it felt, not hinged like other matchbook covers at their folds. No, this one felt solid, like an actual baseball card. Judging by its obvious staple holes, however, we can be sure it was in fact a standard matchbook at some point and not some uncirculated relic set aside by whomever printed it. Our guess is that a Mantle fan or matchbook collector probably unfolded it decades ago and kept it flat, perhaps in book, for the last half-century. How else could it have survived like this? Appropriately assessed Near Mint 7, the offered copy is the single highest graded example on record with PSA from among all three variations of Mantle's Holiday Inn Matchbook. If not for a few hardly perceptible bits of wear along its side edges, this thing is so impressive that it might have graded as high as Mint to even Gem Mint. We have no doubt whatsoever that it will remain among the top graded examples, if not the single finest of them all, for decades to come.
