Among the more challenging cards from the Sandy Koufax Master Set Registry checklist at PSA to find in Mint or better condition are the four identically designed Exhibits cards produced throughout the late 1950s and early 60s. Only four examples have ever graded PSA 9 Mint from each of the three different sets: 1947-66, 1962 Statistic Back, and 1963 Statistic Back. The 1962 set was unique from the others in that examples were printed with at least two different colors (red and black) used for the statistics grid on back, though we've also seen a bluish-grey shade that might technically comprise a third variation. For decades, collectors have traditionally valued the Red Backs higher than the other(s), but in the case of Sandy Koufax, at least when it comes to the hobby's highest graded specimens, their scarcity is comparable. Each reports just five copies on record in the NM-MT 8 grade with just two copies graded higher, all in the Mint 9 grade. In fact, until the offered copy surfaced, the black back had been a Pop 1 PSA 9 for far longer than the red back.

Mint 9 populations aside, the important point here is that no Koufax copies from any of the three different sets have ever graded PSA 10 Gem Mint. While we can't guarantee any specific results, the offered Pop 2 PSA 9 appears worthy of review for consideration as the hobby's first-ever Gem Mint 10. From its corners and edges to its surfaces and print quality, every facet appears to be utterly perfect, especially when compared to the PSA 8 NM-MT specimen we're concurrently offering in this auction, which shows the typical spray of extraneous print dots on front that usually hinder even the finest examples from grading higher than EX-MT 6 or NM 7. We've handled dozens upon dozens of these cards over the last two decades, and never before have we encountered one remotely as clean and worthy of preeminent status as this borderline Gem. Offered with our strongest recommendation. Bid relentlessly, and review.
