For those relatively new to the hobby, Precious Metal Gems (PMG) have become the undisputed king of 1990s parallels and inserts. Featuring a colorful, textured all-foil design that glimmers under light with a refractor-like shimmer, these are cards that must be held in hand in order to get a sense of what truly makes them so special— and valuable! This past February, a 1997-98 Metal Universe PMG Green card of NBA legend Michael Jordan caused an eruption of national media coverage when it sold on eBay for over $350,100, an otherworldly sum of money and a record for a modern sports card. Limited to the first 10 of a print run of 100, the '97 PMG Green set is considered the Holy Grail of basketball cards. The fame earned and fortune achieved by this set and its record-shattering Jordan has led investors and collectors alike to seek out cards from Fleer's other PMG runs. Just take a quick peek at prices on eBay: an ungraded (but very low-grade) example of the very Derek Jeter card seen here is up for sale at $2,799. And you know something? The seller isn't crazy for asking for it!

With all due respect to other specimens out there, the offered example—serial numbered 11/50 on the reverse—is the finest from this issue we've handled here at Small Traditions, and one of the nicest we've ever laid eyes upon. Other than some minor foil chipping on its top obverse border, it was largely spared the edge wear that generally plagues PMGs, a flaw which can knock otherwise mint copies down into the EX to EX-MT range. Thanks to its four sharp corners and virtually flawless foil surfaces, the offered card has been graded Mint 9 by PSA, one of just two copies to achieve this distinction, with none besting it. And it hails from a period in the late 1990s when Jeter was the biggest star in the Big Apple, winning World Series titles for the Yankees, dating the most beautiful women in the world, and making cameo appearances in hit TV shows like Seinfeld. This card is the absolute best of what the 90s brought to the hobby, and is an investment piece par excellence in this soon-to-be Hall of Famer. To quote Seinfeld's Kenny Bania, "That's gold, Jerry! Gold!"
