Spring 2017 Major League Baseball "Set Registry Masters" Premium Auction
In 2009, Upper Deck purchased 93 copies of the famous 1993 SP Foil Derek Jeter rookie card off the market, paid The Yankee Captain to hand sign each one, and then reinserted all 93 copies into packs of its 2009 SP Authentic Hobby and 2009 Upper Deck SP Retail boxes. The cards were hand numbered on the front from 1 to 93 and packaged along with a certificate of authenticity inside of a penny sleeve in the so-called "hot" packs that contained a winner. Offered here is the 17th card in the 93-card buyback program, slabbed and certified authentic by PSA/DNA, with a Mint 9 autograph that looks every bit a perfect 10. Jeter collectors are sticklers for details, and it has been determined that the 93 authentic buyback holograms for the program fell into one of two sequences, from UDC47027 to UDC47099 and from UDC46900 to UDC46919, give or take two cards on either end. The treasured buyback offered here bears a sticker on the reverse with UDC47043 and is absolutely authentic. The card does not have a numerical grade but appears to be in about EX/MT shape, due to some minor corner wear and surface scratches in the card's susceptible foil surface which commonly occurred when the card stacked into a vault box and stored without plastic protection. In fact, most of the '93 SP buybacks appear in similar condition or worse, showing obvious wear and bearing noticeable traces of market circulation. The all-important signature, however, borders on perfection, its clean, elaborate lines standing in awesome juxtaposition to the card's reflective foil surface. To our knowledge, this is the only specimen of this card with an autograph graded Mint 9 or better, a testament to Jeter's superb penmanship on the offered item.
A 1993 SP Foil Derek Jeter card is a hot commodity in its own right, and a signed example is even more desirable. But an authentic signed example from the famous 93-card 2009 SP buyback program ranks as one of the most coveted Jeter rookie cards in the hobby, and if you can't get your hands on a PSA 10 example of the unsigned SP Foil rookie, which are currently selling for about $35,000 now, here's the next best thing.
Please note: This card does not have a separate Upper Deck COA, which was lost by the card's original owner. However, the authentication hologram on the card back is an exact match for its serial number. This item comes with double assurances from both PSA and Small Traditions that it is one of the 93 pack-pulled examples, so bid with complete confidence!
