Spring 2017 Major League Baseball "Set Registry Masters" Premium Auction
Robin Yount played his entire 20-year career in relative obscurity in Milwaukee, in an era just before the 24-hour sports news cycle and internet. This might explain how, in his Cooperstown career, he was selected to a mere three All-Star Games. In 1989, he became one of just 10 players in MLB history to win an MVP award but not earn selection to the Midsummer Classic. If only Yount played today, his combination of power, speed, and hitting for average would make him a fantasy baseball superstar, and certainly gain him greater stardom outside of the state of Wisconsin.
Nevertheless, Yount is a widely collected player in the hobby, due in large part to his membership in the Baseball Hall of Fame and the 3,000 hit club. His most popular card is his 1975 Topps rookie card, a PSA 10 Gem Mint example of which sold for an astounding $38,240 in August of last year. The offered Yount card certainly doesn't have the clout of the Brewer great's Topps rookie, but it is nonetheless a Pop 1 Gem Mint RC. This 1975 O-Pee-Chee Blank Back Proof card has been graded Gem Mint 9.5 by BVG, Beckett's vintage imprint. As PSA does not grade proof cards like these, BVG is the go-to source for this card, and this is the finest known example. With subgrades of 9.5, 9.5, 9.5, and 9, it is most definitely high end for its grade. Printed in Canada, this O-Pee-Chee Blank Back Proof is exactly like its American-made Topps cousin, except for its unprinted reverse. We firmly believe that this will be a jewel in even the finest of Yount collections, as it is the one-and-only gem mint example in existence.
