Spring 2017 Major League Baseball "Set Registry Masters" Premium Auction
Of Mickey Mantle's business ventures, one of the most successful was his investment in a Holiday Inn motel in Joplin, Missouri. The travel lodge, christened Mickey Mantle's Holiday Inn, was a tourist destination in its own right, complete with modern amenities such as air conditioning, in-ground swimming pool, and a baseball-themed sports lounge and bar containing a trophy case of Mantle memorabilia. Motel management, however, soon learned an important lesson: "If it isn’t nailed down, it will probably be stolen." To feed the public's appetite for souvenirs, an extensive gift shop was opened on premises. Hawking everything from postcards to matchbooks to pocket knives bearing Mantle's Holiday Inn logo, the shop was a success. The offered picture postcard was one such item originally acquired from the gift shop. Graded (and we certainly believe undergraded) Excellent 5 by PSA, this colorful card features two photos of the Mick—one batting and the other kneeling on deck—on a gorgeous summer day. With only 11 examples scoring higher—and precisely zero grading above a NM 7—this is a scarce condition-sensitive beauty you'll be proud to add to your Mantle menagerie.
