Frank Robinson's 1957 Topps #35 card has long been recognized as the 1956 National League Rookie of the Year's mainstream rookie card. As of writing, there are 307 examples of Robinson's '57 Topps RC in PSA 8 NM-MT condition, with 40 graded higher. Compare these numbers to those of the Cincinnati star's 1957 Sohio Gas Indians/Reds rookie. The offered card is the one-and-only example in PSA 8 grade, with just one copy ranking above it. Furthermore, it is one of a mere five examples on record with PSA, a virtually microscopic number for a first-year card of a Hall of Fame hero like Robinson. Although it certainly doesn't have the hobby legacy of his Topps card, this oversized beauty is a white whale in an ocean of vintage cardboard.

The story behind the 1957 Sohio Gas cards provides more clues as to why graded specimens are so rare. Distributed in Standard Oil of Ohio (Sohio) service stations, 18 black-and-white cards, measuring 5" x 7" each, were created for the Buckeye State's two major league teams, the Cleveland Indians and the Cincinnati Redlegs. Kids were instructed to collect the cards and then to paste them into special albums created for each team. Needless to say, the vast majority of surviving examples either remain glued in an album or have suffered paper loss on their reverse due to removal. That is what makes this PSA 8 specimen all the more special. Not only did it survive these six decades without being mounted in an album or scrapbook, it also emerged in nearly impeccable condition. In fact, a strong argument can be made for a Mint 9 grade given the sharp corners, on-target centering, and clean surfaces of this stunning photo card. Robinson is a two-time MVP, two-time World Series champion, and all-time baseball great. We strongly advise you to submit your bids on this extremely rare rookie card now, because chances are it will disappear for many years into a lucky collector's personal collection.
