Spring 2017 Major League Baseball "Set Registry Masters" Premium Auction
With his short but deceptive stature and his wild swing and his even wilder sayings, Yogi Berra was one of the biggest little oddballs in the history of baseball, and this month we are pleased to pay homage to the Hall of Famer with three different oddball cards of the oddball Yankee that rank as the single highest graded on record. Offered here is the lone PSA 8 NM-MT specimen of Berra's rare 1951 Wheaties Premium photo. According to the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards, "Whether or not these 5" x 7" black-and-white, blank-back photos were ever issued at all, or only on a test basis, is unknown. Despite being unmarked, they are reliably attributed to General Mills, possibly intended for use as a Wheaties premium." Only a few hundred examples are believed to be in circulation, and until this copy recently graded as the entire issue's first-ever example in the NM-MT 8 grade, the next best Berras had been a pair in the EX-MT 6 category. Despite his 19-season playing career spread across three different decades, the Yogi Berra PSA Master Set Registry currently contains an attainable total of just 115 items. Whether you're hoping to start a new registry or to add to an existing one, the offered prize will distinguish your set from every other Yogi Berra collection in existence.
