It is appropriate that our Fall Classic Auction is headlined by a collection of cards featuring the great Joe DiMaggio. In 13 big league seasons, all with the New York Yankees, the legendary centerfielder participated in ten World Series, leading his team to an incredible nine championships. On the diamond, Joe served as the bridge for the fabled Bronx Bomber teams of Lou Gehrig to those of Mickey Mantle. Off the field, DiMaggio was the undisputed hero of Italian Americans throughout the country, and was a cultural icon nationwide. In addition to marrying the stunning Hollywood beauty Marilyn Monroe, he has been celebrated in literature and song by the likes of Ernest Hemingway, Les Brown and Simon & Garfunkel. His 56-game hitting streak is one of the few records in baseball that not only has survived untainted by the controversies of the steroid era, but has instead become more venerated than ever before. Joltin' Joe epitomized mid-century American style, class, and grace.

Leading off in our stacked October auction lineup is a DiMaggio card that is every bit deserving of top billing. Rare in any grade, each of the 24 player cards in the oversized 1939 R303-B Goudey Premium set could be found printed in either black and white or with sepia-colored inks, with both versions measuring 4-3/4” by 7-5/16”. According the the PSA Population Report, the Newport Beach-based authenticator has graded 44 black and white DiMaggio specimens, and just 11 of the three-time MVP's sepia variant. That is what makes the offered card all the more extraordinary. Up for bids is the one-and-only copy of Joe's sepia '39 Goudey Premium in impeccable PSA 9 Mint condition. Featuring a timeless and statuesque portrait bust of the New York idol on the obverse, with baseball instructions for kids on the reverse, this item exhibits near-perfect centering, sharp corners, and clean edges. Not only is it the highest graded example in the hobby by two full grades, this exact card is showcased by PSA on its CardFacts webpage for this classic set!

One of the two PSA 7 Near Mint 1939 Goudey Premium Sepia DiMaggios sold at auction for $2,524 last year. That card, however, is not in the same ballpark as the offered PSA 9. If you are searching for an ultra high-end collectible to add to your portfolio, this card is the finest example of its kind in existence. No matter the economy, there will always be a buyer for the best, and we are honored to offer this museum-quality masterpiece in our Fall Classic Auction. Once purchased, elite cards like this do not return to market for years, sometimes decades. If you want to secure this Joltin' Joe jewel for your own collection, now is the time to step up to the plate.
