Four decades before Topps introduced refractors in their baseball card products for kids to collect, farmers' cooperative Dairylea was providing kids with reflectors of New York Yankees star Mickey Mantle. And unlike refractors, which were promptly placed into toploaders, penny sleeves, or binders, these Mantle reflector decals were affixed to Schwinns, Huffys, and Roadmasters. As a result, precious few have survived through the years; PSA has evaluated only 38 examples, a minuscule number considering Mantle's exalted status in the game and hobby.

The offered Dairylea decal is one of a mere five copies in PSA 8 NM-MT condition, with none scoring higher. Another one of these top-graded five examples recently surfaced on eBay in late March of this year and lasted just a couple of days until someone purchased it for $4,999 with the straight Buy-It-Now option. Square shaped with sides measuring 2¼", it was printed by Palm Brothers Decalcomania Company of Cincinnati using special inks designed to reflect light from car headlights. Featuring a graphic of a smiling young Mantle, the slugger instructs kids to "play it safe" and "obey traffic rules." This truly is one of the more unique items of the Mick on the PSA Registry's challenging Mickey Mantle Master Set. We guarantee more than one of the 102 Mantle Master Set registrants would love to secure this high-end decal for their Commerce Comet portfolio. And as tempting as it might be, we don't recommend sticking this decal on your vintage bike!
