Despite the fact that the Gold Parallel of Fleer's popular Brilliants brand was one of the most alluring and coveted inserts produced in 1999, it's not very surprising that the offered Gem is the one and only Derek Jeter example to ever grade PSA 10. Limited to an extremely short print run of just 99 copies made, the cards feature an ultra sleek and shiny gold surface that is perhaps more sensitive to scratches and other imperfections than any other insert card produced that memorable year that Derek and the Yankees won their third World Series title since the soon-to-be Captain's rookie season of 1996. In the late 1990s, most similar refractor and Mirror insert cards were distributed with a thin protective film that shielded their flashy surfaces and absorbed the brunt of scratches from distribution and handling, but not the Brilliants Gold. In fact, although the Gold cards parallel all 175 cards in the base Brilliants set, only a handful of other players have ever graded PSA 10, including two Cal Ripkens, and then one each of Ken Griffey Jr., Alex Rodriguez, and Freddy Garcia, and that's it. If that's not compelling enough, then consider that BGS has likewise graded just 4 total Gold copies from the entire set in their Gem Mint grade, and be confident that this is one heck of challenging 1990s insert card to find, in any condition, but especially in Gem Mint. Low pop PSA 10 serial-numbered Michael Jordan cards from similar 1990s insert sets fetch between $5,000 and $10,000 these days, leaving one to wonder what similar Jeters like this Brilliants Gold will fetch once the Captain approaches 4,000 hits -- he's sure not done yet -- and once he retires, and once he enters the Hall of Fame, and once the Yankees retires his iconic #2, right next to #s 3, 4, 5, and 7, or right before them, that is. Lock it away for a few years, are we'll be happy to buy it back for double the price if it hasn't already tripled after these eventual post career milestones. A legitimate long-term investment that looks much nicer than mere numbers on paper, and a masterpiece in any advanced Jeter collection. A truly brilliant card that you must see in person to fully appreciate. Don't let it get away!
