The 1995 Bowman's Best Blue Refractor parallel set is among the most visually alluring and recognizable sets of the 1990s, and it is also one of the most infamously condition sensitive sets of the entire modern period. The first two cards of this iconic set feature two of the game's most promising young talents in Derek Jeter and Vladimir Guerrero, both future Hall of Famers. No example of the #1 Derek Jeter card has ever graded gem mint by any grading company, while only a small handful of Guerrero examples have made the grade. To be precise, only 4 of the 322 Guerrero copies submitted to PSA have earned the Newport Beach grading firm's top Gem Mint 10 designation, while just 2 copies from 186 submitted have risen to Gem Mint 9.5 distinction at Beckett Grading Services.

Proudly offered in this lot is one of those two existing Gem Mint copies on record at BGS. No sales records exist for any of the four PSA 10 copies in existence—though current market trends suggest well over five figures—while the only other BGS 9.5 Gem in existence recently fetched $6,100 in a February 2018 eBay auction. Severe centering issues have always been the problem with this card, to such a surprising and widespread degree that 188 of the 322 copies on record at PSA have been graded with the company's "OC" qualifier. The offered example, however, features unusually perfect centering on both front and back, and its condition is bolstered by noticeably sharp and problem-free gem mint corners and edges. Worthy of every bit of its legendary status, even a passing glance confirms the card's stunning visual appeal.

As for the depicted player, Guerrero was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2018 with 92.9% of the vote in his second year of eligibility. One of the most beloved players of his generation, he routinely ranked among his league's top MVP candidates, winning the award in 2004 with the Anaheim Angels. A nine-time all-star and eight-time Silver Slugger, Vlad the Impaler was feared not only for his hitting prowess but also for his defensive range and deadly accurate throwing arm. He was best known, however, for his intensely aggressive approach at the plate. He connected on more balls thrown out of the strike zone than perhaps any other player in baseball history, and on 126 occasions he took the first pitch of an at-bat and deposited the ball into the outfield stands, likely the most in MLB history. Although his home run and hit totals of 449 and 2,590 fall short of joining baseball's immortal 500 home run and 3,000 hit clubs, he played his entire career through baseball's scandalous PED period but was never once suspected of synthetically enhancing his five-tool arsenal. Now immortalized in Cooperstown, HOF rookie card collectors will be chasing his 1995 Bowman's Best Refractor card in gem mint condition until the end of time. Unfortunately, there won't ever be nearly enough to go around, so seize this rare and potentially once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and add this sensational Super Vlad to your long term cardboard portfolio today.
