Graded PSA 7 NM. The 1962 Exhibit Stat Back Red variation Mickey Mantle is a tough find in any condition. As I write this, not a single example can be found on eBay, and only 27 copies have ever been submitted to PSA for grading. Examples in Near Mint or better condition, however, may be considered among The Mick's rarest cardboard issued during his entire playing career. To date, only three other copies in addition to the offered piece have ever realized NM 7, and only one copy has made each the NM+ 7.5 and NM-MT 8 grades, and that's it, folks. As far as we know, this card simply does not exist in Mint condition, and precious few have survived in Near Mint shape.
Not only is the presented example among the top half dozen copies in existence, but it appears to have been conservatively graded to the extreme. Mint to Gem Mint left corners face NM to NM-MT right corners between NM-MT edges around a NM-MT or better obverse image and a nearly pristine reverse, arguably making this one of the finest three copies ever graded, if not the best of them all.
Exhibit cards have a strange but undeniable appeal. They're like the vegetables you couldn't stomach as a kid but now crave as an adult. The black and white images transport us to a simpler time, and the large and very legible stats on back have a very special appeal to those who maybe should have eaten more carrots in their youth.
