Here's a Mickey Mantle item you don't see every day. This 1968-70 matchbook cover was a promotional item from the Mick's Country Cookin' restaurant chain, the first of which was located at 3651 Marvin D. Love Freeway at Polk in Dallas, Texas. The claim to fame of this eatery was that it served up homestyle food using recipes from Mantle family members including Cousin Bessie Mantle, Judge Jefferson Mantle, and Marshal Hezekiah Mantle. The recently retired Yankees great had previously enjoyed success investing his name and money in a Holiday Inn in Joplin, Missouri. His time as a restaurateur, however, was short-lived, as the business soon failed. Graded EX-MT 6 by PSA, this offered matchbook from Mantle's Country Cookin' is one of only two in this grade, with none scoring higher. Although it does not count towards the set's GPA, it is among the diverse assortment of Commerce Comet items on the Mickey Mantle PSA Master Registry Set, a daunting undertaking for even the most deep-pocketed of collectors. If you are a fan of the Oklahoma-born slugger, this piece of Mantle ephemera is one you likely will never see come around again, especially in this high grade.
