In the world of sports collectibles, there have been a lot of great innovations over the years. There have also been ideas that weren't so great. (Pinnacle's cards in a can, anyone?) After printing a small trial run, Topps executives apparently felt their 1988 Cloth cards fell in the latter category, as they never were released to market. However, examples from this experimental endeavor eventually trickled into the hobby, albeit in extremely limited quantities. In contrast to the literally millions of each card printed from Topps's 792-card 1988 base set, only a couple dozen (if that) of each of the 121 cards in the Cloth Experimental partial parallel set exist. Printed on a textured, Tyvek-like synthetic paper stock, these blank backed cards are extremely condition sensitive. In fact, of the six total copies evaluated by PSA, only one has ever earned a grade above an Excellent 5.

That one card, incidentally, is the key card in the set, Atlanta Braves legend Tom Glavine's rookie. Offered here is the sole PSA 10 Gem Mint example of this card, unquestionably the single finest Glavine rookie card in existence. Although he was not as heralded as teammate Greg Maddux, Glavine was a two-time National League Cy Young Award winner in his own right, and finished his illustrious career with 305 wins, one of just 24 hurlers to earn 300 or more big league victories. Acquiring this extraordinary rarity—one of a mere two total Glavine Cloths ever graded by PSA—is arguably the best investment you can make in 1980s cardboard, even though it isn't actually printed on cardboard.
