The presented Type 1 original 7-1/2" x 9" vintage photograph features the star-studded 1928-29 New York Yankees team, which can be distinguished from other years' lineups by Manager Miller Huggins, seated center, who passed away in 1929. Also included are Yankee immortals Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, plus Bill Dickey, Tony Lazzeri, Earle Combs, Benny Bengough, Red Ruffing, Herb Pennock, Lefty Gomez, Waite Hoyt, and more. With their famed Murderer's Row, one of the best lineups in baseball history, the Yankees had won the World series in 1927 and 1928, but they would slip to second and then third place in 1929 and 1930, when Bob Shawkey replaced Miller Huggins, and they wouldn't then return to fall classic form until Joe McCarthy arrived in 1931 and righted the ship in 1932, eventually helping to steer the team to seven championships in his 16 seasons at the helm. Original team photos produced during the period in which they were taken are rare, and this once can be distinguished as a Type 1 because of its thin period paper stock, which shows some very light foxing on back and crazing on front, not to mention its outstanding image clarity and contrast. Despite its signs of age, however, the photo remains in remarkable condition overall and presents one of baseball's most famous lineups ever assembled in stark, life-like quality.
