Spring 2017 Major League Baseball "Set Registry Masters" Premium Auction
Very few of Derek Jeter's rookie cards from his American League Rookie of the Year season of 1996 boast populations of 6 or lower in the prestigious grade of PSA 10 Gem Mint, and this is one of them. The 1996 Pinnacle Team Spirit insert is an uncharacteristically thicker card for the period, which makes finding Mint or better examples a challenge for high-grade enthusiasts. This popular but condition sensitive rookie insert card is essentially two cards glued together, with the top layer featuring a die-cut design, adding an appealing dimension of depth to the card when layered over the base card. Like many of Jeter's more intricate cards from the insert-crazed 1990s, the Team Spirit card is much more appealing to admire in person than in our two dimensional scans. No examples from the entire 12-card set have ever graded Gem Mint from BGS, while PSA has graded just six, all Derek Jeters. Widely considered one of The Captain's most condition sensitive insert rookie cards, don't expect too many more Gems to surface any time soon, as the odds of pulling a Jeter were about one per case. Given these odds, plus the unavoidable condition sensitivity of the card, we're confident that the offered PSA 10 will remain one of the lowest pop Jeter insert rookies well past his Hall of Fame induction, possibly as the first unanimous selection in the storied history of Cooperstown.
