Spring 2017 Major League Baseball "Set Registry Masters" Premium Auction
Graded PSA 9 Mint Pop 2 with none higher. Most Sandy Koufax collectors will recognize the image on the offered 1960 LA Dodgers postcard as the same photo used for the smaller 1960 Morrell Meats issue. In our humble opinion, it is one of the greatest Koufax images ever captured on film. Sandy stands stoically yet with his characteristic smile before the timeless arches of the Los Angeles Coliseum, where the newly relocated Dodgers played from 1958 to 1961 until Dodger Stadium opened on April 10th, 1962, in the Elysian Park neighborhood of LA. The Coliseum had originally been built to host the 1932 Olympics, but when the Dodgers defeated the Giants there on April 18th, 1958, it became the largest venue to ever host a baseball game. Since then, it has hosted Super Bowls I and VII, the 1984 Olympic Games, the NFL Pro Bowl, and today remains the home of the USC Trojan football team and the newly relocated Los Angeles Rams.
Although traditionally not as coveted as the smaller Morrell Meats issue from the same year, the 1960 LA Dodgers Sandy Koufax Postcard reports a population of just 71 total copies on record, as compared to the Morrell Meats total of 89. Just six copies of the postcard have ever graded PSA 8 NM-MT, while 13 copies of the Morrell Meats card have surfaced in NM-MT 8 shape. Neither issue has ever yielded a PSA 10, while the offered postcard reports a population of just two in the PSA 9 Mint grade, and the Morrell Meats issue a population of just one. Incidentally, that card fetched a whopping $30,808.10 in a Mile High Card Company Auction back in 2007. A year later, Memory Lane auctioned off the only other PSA 9 Postcard for a relative bargain at $3,598.
Offered here is the hobby's second-ever PSA 9 Postcard, a super-sized version of the same memorable card that once fetched nearly $31,000 at auction, arguably just as rare but that much more desirable because of its extra size. It features an iconic image as timeless as the player himself, and if the bidding for the offered PSA 9 Mint Pop 2 highest graded specimen surpasses your budget, then we invite you to please consider our PSA 8 NM-MT example of the same card or even our PSA 6 EX-MT Morrell Meats copy further down in this auction.
