Issued by an anonymous manufacturer in 13-card perforated strips through gumball machines in early 1950, the R423 set features 120 past and present Major League Baseball players on tiny 5/8" by 7/8" black and white cards hardly larger than your thumbnail. Nevertheless, the images are easily recognizable -- iconic, some might even say -- as they appear to be miniature renditions of some of the most famous poses of the respective players ever captured for posterity. Babe Ruth's image, for example, is the same pose immortalized on his red, yellow, and full-body 1933 Goudey cards. Ted Williams matches his 1948 Leaf card. Ty Cobb, his 1921 Exhibit. Offered in this lot is a delightful presentation of six of the more desirable intact strips in sharp NM-MT condition, professionally matted and framed to a dimension of 14" x 13.5" and without damage to the cards, and identified by a bronze engraved plate that reads "1950 R423 SET." In addition to the aforementioned players, some of the other 75 include a second Cobb, Christy Mathewson, Walter Johnson, Lou Gehrig, Stan Musial, and many more. An alluring and attractive conversation piece -- how many more images do you recognize, and from what sources? Hint: think Bowman -- and a tasteful way to display your hobby enthusiasm in your home or office.
