The 2001 Donruss Baseball's Best set had an unorthodox distribution channel. In 1 in 720 packs of 2001 Donruss baseball, collectors could find a redemption card that could, along with $104.99, be exchanged for one of a very limited number of Baseball's Best premium boxed sets. Unbeknownst to collectors at that time, Donruss printed three tiers of this parallel set: Bronze (999 sets), Silver (499 sets), and Gold (99 sets), each differentiated from base cards by their glossy coating and a color-specific foil stamp on the obverse of each card. It goes without saying that the Gold sets were sky high on collectors' want lists, in large part because they each contained multiple rare rookie cards of the game's two hottest freshmen in years: Albert Pujols and Ichiro Suzuki.

Offered here is one of the 99 copies of Ichiro's Baseball's Best Gold "The Rookies" card, #R104 in the set. This particular example, however, towers over the other 98, as it is the one-and-only specimen to score BGS's exalted Pristine 10 grade. Boasting three perfect 10 subgrades, and a half-point short of a fourth, it is one of the premier American-made rookies of the Seattle Mariners superstar. Five years from now, when Cooperstown comes calling Ichi, you better believe that thousands of fans from Japan will be making a pilgrimage to Upstate New York to see their hero enshrined into the Baseball Hall of Fame. The winner of multiple batting titles in Japan and the U.S., this man is sports royalty on two continents, which is appropriate considering the gold foil embossed BGS 10 masterpiece up for bids is worthy of a king's ransom.

Bidders take note: We are also auctioning off the sole BGS 10 example of Ichiro's "Rated Rookie" #195 card from this Baseball's Best gold parallel set, limited to just 99 made. This is an incredible opportunity to add not one, but two rare pristine Ichiro RCs to your treasured collection!
