The 1997 Donruss Elite Passing the Torch Autographs are one of our favorite insert sets from the late 1990s. Each of the eight players selected for inclusion—four veterans and four young stars—was featured on his own card in the set, in addition to four cards pairing the vets with youngsters who played the same position in the field. For instance, shortstop Ozzie Smith—who completed his 19th and final MLB season the previous year—was partnered with Derek Jeter, the reigning American League Rookie of the Year for the '96 World Champion New York Yankees. Thus, it could be said that the Wizard of Oz was "passing the torch" to the Yanks' fresh-faced phenom.

While each of the 12 base Passing the Torch inserts were numbered to 1,500—a relatively small print run for 1997 in its own right—the first 150 of each card was autographed, with the four dual player cards inked by both stars. Offered here is one of the 150 signed copies of the best card in this sought-after set, the Ozzie Smith/Derek Jeter dual autograph card. Serial numbered 0124/1500, it is the only Gem Mint 10 specimen PSA has graded to date. Featuring two-sided foilboard stock embossed with holographic foil accents, these cards are infamously susceptible to chipping and denting. However, the incredible card offered here exhibits four razor-sharp corners and smooth and clean foil surfaces; it is undoubtedly the top example in existence. Signed in lightly toned black ink by the Hall of Famer Smith and Cooperstown-bound Jeter, it is one of those rare cards that Set Registry competitors of both these highly-collected superstars have been eagerly awaiting. That wait is over.
