Spring 2017 Major League Baseball "Set Registry Masters" Premium Auction
This Gold Medallion Derek Jeter parallel from his ROY season of 1996 is a rare find in Gem Mint condition. Four years ago when we sold our first-ever PSA 10 example of this card, it was a Pop 6. In the meantime, Derek Jeter cards have skyrocketed to become the most collected and expensive baseball cards from the late 1990s, the dawn if the insert era, and in all that time the offered card is the only additional specimen to realize the Gem Mint 10 grade from the Newport Beach grading authority. To call it condition sensitive is an understatement. The all-gold foil front is a magnet for fingerprints and scratches, making it as condition sensitive as any all-foil card in the hobby, including the famous 1993 SP Foil, which now stands as a Pop 19 PSA 10 and commands $35,000 or more at auction. All things considered, the silver 1993 SP Foil is undoubtedly a tougher card, but contrary to what its name suggests, the SP is not the least bit rare. Test the waters yourself at eBay. A simple search for 1993 SP Jeter turns up well over 300 available copies, while a search for 1996 Gold Medallion Jeter turns up just four, including another PSA 10 listed for nearly $2,000. Want some free advice for your high-end Derek Jeter rookie card collection? Forget the silver for now, and go for the gold.
