With a print run of just 90 total copies—that is, approximately the number of T206 Wagners believed to exist (accounting for a good handful that haven't turned up yet!)—only the 1996 Select Certified Mirror Gold and Mirror Blue cards, with print runs of 30 and 45, respectively, exist in fewer quantities than the 1996 Select Certified Mirror Red when it comes to Derek Jeter rookie cards. No other Jeter cards from 1992 through 1996 were produced in quantities of less than 100. Moreover, no other Jeter cards from those years is as coveted and enchanting as the Select Certified Mirror cards.

Most collectors think of Jeter's 1993 SP Foil card as The Captain's most iconic and coveted rookie card in PSA 10 Gem Mint condition, but most collectors don't realize that the 1993 SP was not nearly as short-printed as its "super-premium" brand name suggests, with guesstimates of as high as 1.5 million examples of each card in the set produced, including the Jeter Foil. Granted, the card is uber condition sensitive, and PSA has only graded 22 total examples in its Gem Mint 10 grade from just under 15,000 submissions.

But what will that population look like after PSA has graded 50,000 examples, or 100,000, or half a million? At that point, there will likely be as many, or more, PSA 10 Gem Mint 1993 SP Foil rookie cards as there are Mirror Reds, Blues, and Golds in any condition, combined. Ten or twenty years from now, which would you rather own, or pass on to your daughter or grandson? Is there any question? For more information on collecting the groundbreaking 1996 Select Certified Mirror cards, please read "Chasing the Rainbow: The 1996 Select Certified Set" in our blog project at www.JeterCards.com. Parenthetically, the last time we sold a PSA 10 Mirror Red copy of this card, from whose description I stole much of the composition here, PSA had only graded 14 Gem Mint 10 SP Foil cards from just over 11,000 submissions. That was four years ago in our Derek Jeter Farewell Auction.
