Jim Thome is perhaps the most underrated player of his generation. A 22-year big league veteran, Thome especially left his mark in Cleveland, where the infielder hit 337 home runs in his 13 seasons with the Indians, more than any other player in the history of the storied franchise. Even more impressive, he finished his career with 612 long balls, good for eighth on baseball's all-time list. Freshly elected to the Hall of Fame this year, the Cooperstown-bound slugger was also greatly admired by the fans, sportswriters, and his peers. "Ask anyone in baseball—he is as distinguished a representative of the game as [Derek] Jeter, and probably even more popular within the sport," said reporter Ken Rosenthal, one of the many voices in the game who have sung Thome's praises.

Not surprisingly, Jim also has an avid following of cardboard collectors, especially among Cleveland and Philadelphia Phillies fans. Up for bids here is a perfect PSA Gem Mint 10 example of the card at the top of nearly all Thome want lists, his treasured 1996 Select Certified Mirror Gold card. If Helen of Troy was the face that launched a thousand ships, the '96 Mirror Gold parallel was the set that launched a thousand imitators. Limited to only 30 copies—in an era when cards serial numbered to 2,500 were considered rare—this golden set is the gold standard for high-end 90s baseball cards. A few years back, we sold a PSA 10 copy of Jeter's '96 Mirror Gold card for an astounding $33,988, more than doubling our pre-sale expectations. The offered Thome card is a Gem Mint beauty free of refractor lines or any other visible imperfections, and is one of a mere three examples to earn PSA's highest grade. It is no exaggeration to say you are looking at the Holy Grail of Thome collectibles, a veritable crown jewel for your Cleveland Indians collection.
