Hitting a grand slam with its regular 1996 Leaf Signature Series issue in August of 1996, Donruss released a second "Extended Series" of its ground-breaking Signature cards just before the end of the calendar year. The first series had broken the baseball card playbook by including an autographed card in each and every pack produced, while the Extended Series topped even that by including two autograph cards per pack, with every twelfth pack yielding four signed cards. Counted among the Extended Series autographs were 218 players, with stated print runs of 5,000 each, though many were short-printed. One of those short-prints featured the 1996 American League Rookie of the Year and recent World Series champion, Derek Jeter, whose post-season schedule must have been too crammed with events to find the time to sign more than 1,000 copies of his Extended Series autograph card, offered here in spectacular PSA 10 Gem Mint condition and ranking as one of just 20 copies  (click the PSA/DNA tab) to make the top grade at PSA.

After one of the most productive rookie seasons of the modern period, the future Yankee Captain was an integral part of the 1996 World Series squad, the first in the historic franchise's existence since 1978. Coupled with the size of their market and the team's historical significance, when the Yankees win—so they say—it's good for all of baseball, and this couldn't have been more true than in the second half of the 1990s, when baseball was fighting to regain the respect of fans around the globe after the debacle of the strike-shortened 1994 season. In this way, as an immediate leader of those celebrated late '90s Yankees dynasty teams, Derek's long list of career achievements can also include helping to restore the nation's faith in its celebrated pastime, leading his team to three more world championships in the next four years. Most people think of Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa when they think of baseball's incredible rebound from the 1994 strike, but Derek was right there, too, and in equally significant ways for which he rarely gets credit. Celebrate the career of one of the most respected and admired baseball players since Babe Ruth with a winning bid on this challenging rookie year signature card today!
