Derek Jeter played 69 games for the Tampa Yankees of the High A Florida State League, his first of three stops climbing the rungs of the minors in 1994. Jeter, the heralded 1992 first round draft pick of the New York Yankees, batted .329 in his stint in the Sunshine State, before being promoted to AA-ball Albany-Colonie. Later in '94, he was brought up to AAA Columbus, where he was managed by Stump Merrill. "He’s unbelievable," the Columbus skipper said of Jeter. "If he‘s not the full package, I haven’t seen one."

Although none of Jeter's minor league baseball cards receive the fanfare of his 1993 SP #279 foil card, they were printed in smaller quantities and are generally much more difficult to track down, and are rarely found in high grade. Offered here is the highest graded example of the legendary shortstop's 1994 Tampa Yankees Classic #1 rookie card, arguably the most attractive of his pre-Bronx cardboard. Cleanly designed and featuring a handsome color portrait of the teenaged Jeter, this example has been rated Pristine 10 by BGS, one of only three copies to earn Beckett's highest mark. Simply put, this card is as close to perfection as it gets—that is, other than Jeter's trademark "inside-out" swing, which helped him collect nearly 3,500 big league hits and will soon earn him a well-deserved plaque in Cooperstown.
