Derek Jeter didn’t spend long with the Double-A Albany-Colonie Yankees, playing only 34 games in upstate New York before being promoted to the AAA Columbus Clippers. The future Captain’s quick promotion in 1994 meant that most minor league cards of the shortstop from that year were printed with him in his Columbus uniform and not in Albany pinstripes. The card offered here, therefore, is special for three reasons: 1) it’s Jeter’s only card from his time with Albany-Colonie; 2) it’s extremely rare; the offered PSA 10 Gem Mint is one of only 20 total copies ever evaluated by PSA from a total submission pool of just 52, making it his rarest 1994 issue and one of the single rarest of all 320 issues produced during his rookie era of 1992 to 1996; and 3) like the notoriously condition-sensitive 1996 Sports Illustrated for Kids Tiger Woods rookie card, this rarified Jeter is a magazine insert, with the same delicate, perforated edges and paper-thin card stock, making extraction a challenge for even the most sure-handed surgeon. In short, the offered card isn't just exceedingly rare or condition sensitive; it's a milestone memento in terms of Jeter's development as a player. He hit .377 during his short stay at Albany-Colonie, earning him a promotion to Triple-A Columbus, his final minor-league destination on the train to pinstriped immortality. If you're a serious Jeter collector looking for a long-term investment opportunity, few cards can match the potential of this rarely offered and significantly undervalued piece.
