Math time: The 1985 Donruss Kirby Puckett rookie card reports 298 examples graded PSA 10 Gem Mint and 97 copies graded BGS 9.5 Gem Mint. For comparison's sake, the 1985 Fleer Puckett rookie reports 233 PSA 10s and 19 BGS 9.5 Gems, and the 1985 Topps and Topps Tiffany report 339 and 50 PSA 10s, and 134 and 12 BGS 9.5s, respectively. These are the key rookie cards issued in 1985 that feature the Hall of Famer. Only two of them, however, have ever reported examples that have surpassed the Gem Mint grade to land in the exalted BGS 10 Pristine category. The iconic 1985 Topps issue has vaulted past Gem Mint to realize Pristine 10 distinction fifteen times from a sizable submission pool of 2,550 copies, while the equally iconic 1985 Donruss card has done it just four times. Save for a lone 1985 O-Pee-Chee specimen, no other Puckett rookie card from 1985 has risen to similar heights.

Proudly offered here is one of those anomalous four Donruss copies graded BGS 10 Pristine. With its black-bordered design, realizing perfection on a card from the 1985 Donruss set is no easy task, but to realize the Pristine 10 mark on one of the set's key Hall of Fame rookie cards is next to impossible. Deserving of consideration for the finest collections in the world, this unlikely masterpiece of the so-called "junk wax" era is absolutely one of the single most significant Kirby Puckett rookie cards in the hobby.
