A perfect companion piece to our 1984 Topps John Elway rookie card graded BGS 10 Pristine in lot #3 of this month's auction, the offered 1984 7-Eleven Discs oddball card has likewise been graded BGS 10 Pristine and reports just a half dozen other copies on record in the pinnacle Pristine class at the Dallas-based Beckett Grading Services. Most fans know that Elway was selected by the New York Yankees in the second round of the 1981 MLB Draft, but not everyone knows that he was chosen 52nd overall, six spots ahead of future Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, and that George Steinbrenner and Yankee scout Gary Hughes believed he "would've been off the charts" if he focused on baseball. Terry Bradshaw also instructed the west coast phenom to pursue a career in the National Pastime, though with much less congeniality. What many fans also don't know, however, is that Elway was also drafted out of high school in 1979 by the Kansas City Royals, to which George Brett reportedly stated, "I hope this guy plays football." And good thing he did!
