When we auctioned a comparatively low-grade 1968-70 Mickey Mantle Country Cookin' Postcard two summers ago for $3,696, we knew it existed because we'd seen a few other copies in other auctions over the last couple of decades. Up until that card had surfaced, however, PSA had refused to grade the card, primarily because there was no record of its existence, and no one could figure out exactly when it was produced. Most collectors had believed it was printed in 1970, long after Mantle had played in his last game in 1968, but the 1969 postmark on that first copy proved them wrong. As an item proven to have been produced in the year directly following his final season, much like Mantle's 1969 Topps #500 card, PSA finally agreed to add this fantastic black and white postcard to Mantle's Master Set Registry checklist.

Although likewise only graded PSA Authentic because of its 1969 postmark and postal use, the offered copy appears in surprisingly resilient EX-MT condition, far better than the first copy we sold over one-and-a-half years ago. In the nearly 19 months since then, only four other copies have surfaced at PSA. If the story was that there existed multiple copies of this unusually rare card waiting for PSA to finally recognize it, then surely there would be more than a paltry half-dozen on record at PSA by this point. Bottom line, we wouldn't recommend that you wait too long for another copy to surface. We know from experience that they surface with less frequency than many of even the rarest and most esoteric Mantle oddballs on record at PSA. The reality is that they are so scarce that the majority of The Mick's most ardent and informed collectors are currently unable to claim a copy as their own. That changes for one lucky bidder with this auction.
