Spring 2017 Major League Baseball "Set Registry Masters" Premium Auction
One of three copies graded PSA 10 Gem Mint. The iconic Baseball Greats postcard offered in this lot is checklisted in PSA's population report with the 1962-1965 Los Angeles Dodgers Postcards. It was produced by Colourpictures Inc. of Boston, MA, and distributed by Mitock & Sons of Sherman Oaks, CA. Similar to all the Dodgers player postcards on the 1962-1965 checklist, plus those on the 1966 checklist, the card bears a catalog number on back, making it possible to sequence and date these different postcards as well as any that may have been produced before or after them. For example, the Sandy Koufax player card from 1962-65, an example of which is offered in lot #97 in this auction, bears the number P50318, while the Sandy Koufax player card from 1966, offered in the lot following this Baseball Greats listing, bears the number P67392. The number on this Baseball Greats card, however, is P62008, which suggests to us that it probably shouldn't be checklisted with the 1962-65 LA Dodgers Postcards but rather with a separate 1964 or 1965 Plastichrome Postcards grouping.
Unfortunately, there is no record of the LA Dodgers Postcards in the Standard Catalog nor in any other resource we've been able to locate. Given the wide range in their sequencing, however, plus the existence of multiple formats (perforated, miniature, etc.) for the 1966 issue, we think it's high time someone researched and published a comprehensive baseball and other sports postcard catalog. The first baseball cards ever produced, after all, were a version of a postcard, and there are literally thousands of postcards to follow in their wake that have never been properly catalogued. They are refreshing in their unfamiliarity, and their varying levels of scarcity and value allow even novice 10-year old collectors to purchase century-old cards on a limited budget. If you can't tell already, we at Small Traditions LLC are extremely enthusiastic about the potential for postcard collecting as well as the impact further research and documentation will have on PSA Master Set Registries from boxing legend Jack Johnson to baseball immortal Sandy Koufax and who knows how many others.
