Spring 2017 Major League Baseball "Set Registry Masters" Premium Auction
The 1962-1965 Los Angeles Dodgers Plastichrome Postcards were manufactured in Boston by Colourpicture Publishers, Inc., and they can be found in at least three different versions. Offered here is a clean PSA 8 NM-MT example of the standard issue postcard. Only three other copies have ever attained the NM-MT 8 grade from PSA, and only three have ever graded higher. Relative to some of the other Koufax pieces in this auction, the presented PSA 8 offers the Koufax collector a high-grade regional rarity for a comparatively bargain price.
Also pictured but NOT offered in this lot is both the bottom and top portions of the perforated variation of this same card, which could feasibly be graded as three separate entries in PSA's Sandy Koufax Master Set Registry: the top/header card, the bottom postcard, and the entire sheet still intact. Bound by two staples, these cards were published in a small booklet along with other players and a cover card, which also showed Sandy and could therefore make yet another entry in the Koufax Master Set. That's four Koufax cards for the price of one postcard booklet. Not bad!
Finally, also pictured but likewise NOT offered in this lot is another variation of the same card which we found in a miniature postcard booklet bound together by a plastic binding comb. Additional variations may also exist. For example, more than a few Koufax fans can recall seeing this same image in larger formats. But why show them and write about them here? The answer is simple: Although there are no price guides or other resources which document these variations of the 1962-1965 Los Angeles Dodgers Plastichrome Postcards, we're hoping PSA will eventually recognize all of them, and we hope this entry in our online auction catalog will serve as a record for that purpose.
