Spring 2017 Major League Baseball "Set Registry Masters" Premium Auction
Here is what at first appears to be a nearly perfect example of Pete Rose's rarely encountered 1962-65 Jay Publishing Type 2 Portrait rookie card, which has received an extremely conservative assessment of EX+ 5.5 from the grading team at PSA. One of only a dozen copies on record with the Newport Beach-based grading authority, it is easily one of the most demanded yet least encountered of all the 100+ player photos featured in the popular Jay Publishing issue. Indeed, the only other card more fervently sought yet less frequently encountered is the other Pete Rose variation, which features baseball's future Hit King in a kneeling pose and which has only recorded eight copies on record with PSA.
We were thrilled when we first received this item from our consignor with how Mint to even Gem Mint its paper stock appeared, and we initially had high expectations that it might even grade higher than any of the previously submitted copies on record, but the reality is that the image is heavily off-centered in the direction of the bottom border, which as most collectors know will quickly lower a seemingly Mint 9 card to a grade of NM 7. A fairly prominent print splotch to the right of Pete's neck further demotes the grade to the EX or EX-MT level, hence its final score of EX+ 5.5. Overall, however, this is an unusually clean example entirely devoid of the common kinks and bends that pester most Jay Publishing cards in the EX to EX-MT range. If you've been looking for a respectable copy of this Pete Rose rookie oddball, then look no further; your search is finally over! If you prefer to keep looking, however, then we wish you the best of luck, as not a single copy of either variation has yet to surface on eBay this entire year.
