Baseball historians consider Koufax's 1961 season to be the turning point of the lefty's career, when he began the most dominant six-year stretch of any pitcher in major league history. An 18-game winner in 1961, Sandy led the sport with 269 strikeouts, 48 more Ks than the second-place hurler, Camilo Pascual. Offered here is one of the more challenging Koufax cards issued that year, a borderline Mint 9 Morrell Meats card that has been conservatively assessed at the NM-MT 8 level by the graders at PSA. Printed in Japan, the iconic Morrell Meats cards produced between 1959 and 1961 feature ultra glossy front surfaces that almost always show immoderate amounts of scratches and other wear. The offered copy, however, appears Mint to even Gem Mint in all facets but for its corners, which show touches small enough to at least be considered for the NM-MT+ 8.5 grade overall.
