Spring 2017 Major League Baseball "Set Registry Masters" Premium Auction
The 1959 Jay Publishing All-Stars Mickey Mantle issue is a bit of an enigma. The card features the same exact Mantle portrait used in the 1958-61 Jay Publishing issue, only it shows Mantle's smiling countenance from cap to chest instead of cap to neck. There are several other players in the 1958-61 Jay Publishing issue whose portraits can be found with the same two variations. Take Ernie Backs and Yogi Berra, for example. Interestingly, the Banks Portrait to Neck variation is far scarcer than the Banks Portrait to Chest variation, to the tune of four versus 17 total copies on record, while the opposite is true of Berra, his Portrait to Neck variation reporting a total population of 32 versus his Portrait to Chest variation, which reports just five on record.
What makes even less sense is that the offered Mickey Mantle has been classified in its own set and year, plus it's the only card listed in the set! So either the Portrait to Chest variations in the 1958-61 Jay Publishing pop report should be moved to the 1959 Jay Publishing All-Stars, or the 1959 Jay Publishing All-Stars Mickey Mantle should be moved to the original 1958-61 Jay Publishing issue. Whatever happens, the offered PSA 5 Mantle is one of only 18 ever assessed by PSA in any grade. Moreover, the offered copy looks nearly perfect, like so many of the Jay Publishing photos in this auction, save for a pesky bend in its thin photo stock, which has demoted this otherwise perfect card all the way down to EX 5.
