Spring 2017 Major League Baseball "Set Registry Masters" Premium Auction
One of only five examples to attain the Mint 9 grade from PSA, with none graded higher, offered is a virtually un-circulated and seemingly un-handled copy of Mickey Mantle's 1958-61 Jay Publishing Type 1 Portrait. It's difficult to convey just how hard these nostalgic Jay Publishing 5" x 7" black and white photos and other similar team issues are to find in high-grade. Printed on a thin paper stock similar to magazine or newspaper pages in either a semi-glossy or matte finish, these memorable cards were available in team sets for a quarter each at both stadium souvenir shops and through a mail order program. Both formats were extremely popular with fans young and old, who were eager to fork over their quarters for the keepsakes, which have successfully engaged generations of fans in a way that smaller Topps and other baseball cards could not.
Due to the delicate paper stock of this Mickey Mantle Master Set Registry item, the act of simply removing it from its envelope could easily have created small dents or kinks in its surface as well as mildly touched or bumped corners that would have prevented a grade of anything higher than EX-MT 6. Indeed, to grade a Mint or Gem Mint copy would require that the card had never previously been circulated, and that's exactly what we have here. Hailing from the long-time collection of a respected shop owner here in Denver, this Mantle and several other Jay Publishing cards throughout this auction have not seen the light of day in over half a century.
