The PSA Mickey Mantle Master Set is one of the toughest and most competitive registry sets offered by the Newport Beach-based authentication company. It is also one of the most expensive: not only must collectors obtain the Mick's world-famous 1952 Topps card and his 1951 Bowman rookie, but they must also procure an assortment of lesser-known and extremely scarce food and regional issues. To date, none of the 102 collectors who have registered sets at PSA have collected all 240 items necessary to complete this renowned set.

Part of the challenge of a master set is that not all of the items are traditional baseball cards. They can include paper premiums, decals, pins, and coins as well. One of the most popular non-cardboard baseball sets of the postwar era is a series of plastic coins inserted by meat processor Armour and Co. in packages of its hot dogs. Issued over three years—1955, 1959, and 1960—these half-dollar sized plastic disks have both enchanted and bedeviled player collectors for decades. Although PSA does not differentiate the coins by color, avid enthusiasts of the set have tried to collect their favorite players and teams in the full rainbow of colors, many of them rare, that the coins were cast in. Furthermore, there are numerous variations to chase down.

One of these variations is offered here. It is the error version of Mickey Mantle's 1955 Armour coin, where the Yankee hero's name is curiously misspelled "Mantel." Though corrected later in the production run, this Mantle error coin is the set's most notorious miscue and is eagerly sought after by Commerce Comet collectors and numismatists alike. This offered coin is colored red and is opaque, and has been graded Mint 9 by PSA, with a mere nine coins in higher grade. It is a truly stunning specimen worthy of the finest registry set. Mickey Mantle, Armour franks, and baseball coins—does it get more American than that?
