Here's a Sandy Koufax item from the Brooklyn-born southpaw's rookie period that rarely surfaces for sale in any shape. Though mislabeled by PSA, this is a 1955-1957 Brooklyn Dodgers Picture Pack souvenir photo in strong EX or better condition. While the opined grade of EX 5 might not immediately grab the collector's attention, it is important to consider that the offered example is one of only two copies in its grade with just three higher at the EX-MT 6 level above it from just seven total copies ever submitted to the Newport Beach grading authority. Some might argue that these picture pack photos are more prevalent than the PSA population report suggests, but this is only the third copy we've ever even laid eyes upon in decades of experience of traveling to countless card shows and of browsing thousands upon thousands of auction catalog pages. What is not debatable, however, is the reality that these team issue photos are extremely condition sensitive. Similar to the more common Jay Publishing photos issued later in the 1950s and 1960s, the thin paper stock on which they are printed almost always reveals small dents and kinks in the magazine-like paper. More importantly, this is one of just four total items on PSA's Sandy Koufax Master Set Registry identified as hailing from the bonus baby's rookie year of 1955.

The offered piece appears to be in NM condition but has very likely been downgraded due to what appear to be some extraneous print marks to the left of Koufax's face. While there aren't many other exemplars with which to compare it, we sold one of the three existing EX-MT 6 copies last year for a princely $17,371, and that copy shows the exact same print marks, from the black specks to the white lines. Finally, when considering the rarity of this item, please keep in mind that Koufax did not begin to realize his potential until the 1961 season. In fact, in the combined seasons of 1955 and 1956, he pitched in under 100 total innings. He was not a popular player, and very few Dodgers fans saw any reason to keep his photo from these years.

Important Note: PSA has mislabeled this item as originating from a 1956 Picture Pack, which was no doubt a result of its extreme scarcity. The correct categorization is 1955-57, which PSA will correct at no charge. The population stated above reflects an understanding of this error, as the 1955-57 Picture Pack pop report shows just one EX 5 on record bettered by just three higher, all in the EX-MT 6 grade.
