One of only four copies ever graded PSA 9 Mint with none graded higher. Verda T. "Vitamin" Smith joined the Los Angeles Rams as part of the famous rookie class of 1949 that also included Hall of Fame quarterback Norm Van Brocklin, Hall of Fame running back and receiver Elroy "Crazy Legs" Hirsch, and Paul "Tank" Younger. While in college at Abilene Christian, Smith had once returned three straight kickoffs for touchdowns. In 1949, he led the NFL in punt returns as a 26-year old rookie, and in 1950 he lead the league in kickoff returns, three of which he returned for touchdowns, setting a record that stood until 1967. The following year, the young Rams team won the NFL championship, and Smith would play for another two seasons before retiring. Like so many unsung heroes of his generation, however, he served 35 months in the US Army between his college days and his rookie season and would almost certainly have set additional NFL records were his prime playing days not spent defending freedom in WWII.
