Many baseball historians have argued if not for hitting a patch of ice while driving home from his Harlem, New York liquor store, Dodgers catcher Roy Campanella would have gone down as the greatest backstop in the history of baseball. That car accident, on the night of January 28, 1958, tragically changed the course of his life, as he was paralyzed from the shoulders down. With advances in medicine and rigorous physical therapy, Campy was later able to regain use of his arms and hands, and he became a symbol of hope for disabled persons throughout the United States. A three-time National League MVP and 1955 World Series champion with Brooklyn, Campanella left a legacy on and off the field that is Hall of Fame caliber in every sense of the term.

Offered here is a beautiful PSA 8 NM-MT graded example of Campanella's classic 1949 Bowman #84 rookie card. Ranking in the higher-end of the NM-MT grading spectrum, this card exhibits pack-fresh colors, immaculate image registration, true-to-grade corners and edges, and is accurately centered. It is a gorgeous exemplar of this key card in Bowman's first color set. We do not need to give a long-winded sales pitch to collectors to convince them of this truth: high-grade rookies of baseball's all-time greats will always find a buyer. The demand for them is that strong. Even though his career behind the plate was cut short, Campanella is rivaled only by Yogi Berra for the title of greatest catcher of his generation. If you are looking to bring your cardboard collection to an elite level, securing this Campy rookie card will go a long way in helping you achieve your goal.
